The first set of TLC Funko vinyl figures were initially scheduled for release in 2020, but after a lengthy delay they were eventually released early 2021 in the style of the iconic TLC music video, 1995’s “Waterfalls.” They also came with a translucent set of rare chase editions for those lucky collectors.

Funko were quick to follow-up the debut TLC Funko’s with a release of TLC figures in 2021 based on their debut single, 1992’s “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg“.

Funko decided to gift TLC fans again in February 2022, with another TLC release. This time, Funko gave TLC the Funko Gold treatment, a set of miniature 5-inch figures, also based on the superb “Waterfalls” video.

Last year saw TLC enter the Funko Pop! Albums market in 2023. Funko made a stunning set based on TLC’s debut album, 1992’s ‘Ooooooohhh… on the TLC tip‘, complete with the original album cover in a stunning hard plastic sealed frame, perfect for wall display.

The release of the latest TLC figures from the ‘Fanmail‘ era has been a long time coming, with fans demanding for it to happen over the years. Some even resorted to having custom figures created.

TLC Celebrate ‘FanMail’ 25th Anniversary with Digital Release of EP Singles and Unseen Music Video Footage

TLC celebrated the 25th anniversary of their iconic ‘Fanmail‘ album, released on February 23, 1999!

To celebrate this milestone, the ladies surprised fans with some exclusive never-before-seen footage of behind the scenes clips from the music videos for the first two lead singles from the album, “No Scrubs” and “Unpretty“!

In new interviews for the anniversary with Sony’s legacy catalog, Legacy Recordings, T-Boz and Chilli took a trip down memory lane to discuss their feelings about the ‘Fanmail’ project.

“I was like, I’m gonna record this. This is the one!”, Chilli recalls on the first time she heard the “No Scrubs” demo with producer Shek’spere. “I knew it was a smash”.

Whilst discussing the follow up single, “Unpretty”, T-Boz explains, “It came from a personal situation of mine. Men were being verbally abusive to women, telling them to look down, telling them to look up — it couldn’t have been me! So, I thought of this word, and thought, oh, they’re making them feel un-pretty.”

“We have so many people who tell us that it helps them feel better about themselves — one of them was Lady Gaga. So, you never know who is listening and who the song touches”, T-Boz says. “I feel good!”

Fans were holding out for an anniversary edition of the album. This didn’t happen, unfortunately, but Vinyl Me, Please announced a 3rd Edition pressing of the ‘Fanmail’ album, on sale now.

You can purchase the stunning vinyl here. It comes with a limited bonus vinyl, featuring the Left Eye rap mix of “No Scrubs”, and the bonus track, “U In Me“.

Sony also finally released the complete set of EP’s from the ‘Fanmail’ era to digital platforms. This includes, “No Scrubs”, “Unpretty”, “Dear Lie” and “Silly Ho“.

History, Interview

Kandi: “I Wasn’t Sure ‘No Scrubs’ Would be a TLC Single With Chilli on Lead Vocals Instead of T-Boz”

Kandi Burruss of the 90’s R&B girl group Xscape and most recently known as a long-term cast member on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta, opened up to Entertainment Weekly this week about some of the mega-hits that she has helped to carve out for other artists during her Xscape downtime.

Along with her group member Tameka “Tiny” Harris, the duo penned a number of Billboard number one hits and Grammy Award winning singles, most notably for their girl group peers, “Bills, Bills, Bills” for Destiny’s Child, and before that, the worldwide record-breaking “No Scrubs” for TLC.

Kandi reflects on the moment record label boss LA Reid got hold of her “No Scrubs” demo, produced by Shek’spere, and immediately wanted it for TLC. “I was like, ‘Cool. Let them have it’, because I always wanted to write for other artists, I just didn’t know how to do it”, Kandi admits.

She then touches on the subtle rivalry the industry placed on girl groups. It was also no secret that Jermaine Dupri wanted himself a group like TLC, and would guide Kandi to sing low like T-Boz. “There’s always that low-key rivalry thing that would go around in the industry. It was like, ‘How are you going to get somebody else to let you write for them, and you’re in a whole other girl group?'”

Despite “No Scrubs” being hugely successful and remains her biggest writing credit to date, Kandi admits that she wasn’t completely sure if the song would make it on the 1999 ‘FanMail‘ album at all.

The main reason for Kandi’s uncertainty was the fact that “No Scrubs” marked the first time the roles had switched on a TLC single, with Chilli leading the vocals on the track instead of the regular formula of T-Boz on lead vocals.

“They were going back and forth on what they wanted to do with the song because that’s the first song that Chilli sang lead on. So that’s why I wasn’t really sure if that song was going to be a first single, or even a single at all. Normally, T-Boz was the lead, so I didn’t know if they were going to keep it”, Kandi said.

LA Reid later ran into Kandi at a party and promised her that he was going to make “No Scrubs” the biggest writing hit of her career. “I’m looking at him like, ‘Okay.’ But in my mind I was thinking, ‘Well Xscape, we’ve had some big records… Whatever you say.’ But he wasn’t lying. He was serious, and he really did.”

Chilli did her thing on “No Scrubs” and helped the song to go down in history as the biggest female anthem in the world, that men can also relate to! The song took on a life of it’s own and Left Eye once called it ‘a national anthem’!

Switching up the vocal format was a smart idea which helped to keep TLC fresh and on top of their game.

Which other TLC songs would you want the girls to have fun with? T-Boz leads on “No Scrubs”? Chilli on “Waterfalls” leads? Let us know!

Drake Releases TLC Cover On Latest Project ‘Care Package’

InShot_20190803_012259961

“Said I got an email today, kinda thought that you forgot about me”. Emotionally charged lines from TLC‘s classic track “FanMail“. We definitely haven’t forgotten about one of the greatest highlights on their 1999 comeback album of the same name.

Nor have we forgotten that the futuristic, anthemic track was covered by the then up-and-coming Toronto singer/rapper Drake in 2010, in the form of “I Get Lonely“, for his mixtape, ‘It’s Never Enough’. Back then it was strictly only available on Soundcloud and various uploads on YouTube — until now.

Drake has decided to release a 17-song compilation of his previously unofficially released classics, titled ‘Care Package‘, giving an official platform for the songs to be purchased and streamed commercially. “Some of our most important moments together available in one place,” he stated in an Instagram post.

“I’m envious of friends of mine that have great committed relationships,” Drizzy told MTV in 2010, regarding his feelings towards the subject of feeling lonely. “When people call home to check on their girl or they say, ‘I’m not going to go out tonight. I’m just going to spend the night with my girl.’ That hits me, man. I just don’t have that. You could be lonely with a bunch of people around you.”

With everybody releasing ‘unreleased’ tracks on new projects from Drake to Nas (‘The Lost Tapes 2‘), let’s hope TLC can follow suit and drop an album of their greatest unreleased tracks, something fans are craving for, worldwide.
