Melanie C Shares Her Time Working With Left Eye On Her First Solo Number One Record

Melanie C aka Sporty Spice of the Spice Girls took the opportunity this week to celebrate her debut solo album, 1999’s ‘Northern Star‘, with the weekly pop podcast Track By Track to discuss the album in detail, track-by-track.

The year 2000 was a special time in music. TLC were on hiatus after the success of their mega-selling ‘FanMail‘ album and the record-breaking tour to support it, while the Spice Girls were also taking a break from world domination to focus on their solo projects.

Melanie C decided to team up with Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes on her debut solo album, which led to Melanie earning her first solo number one single in the UK in the summer of 2000, an exciting time for both TLC and Spice Girls fans!

The single in question was “Never Be The Same Again“. Melanie C gave us some beautiful memories of her time working with Lisa around the time of the single being released.

Melanie proudly states that the Spice Girls were huge fans of TLC. “I couldn’t believe my luck when I had the opportunity to work with [Lisa]. And she was perfect!”, Melanie exclaims.

Lisa was the only rapper Mel C wanted on the track with her. “She was the only person I wanted on that song. I was writing with Rhett Lawrence & we got to the middle 8 & all I could hear was a Lisa-style rap”, she recalls. “He gave her a call & next thing I knew she was on the track. So that was a wonderful experience”.

Melanie states that she shot the spiritual video with Lisa in Malibu, which features a scene with Lisa and Melanie performing tai chi moves together while Lisa lays down her iconic verse, once again proving why she was the perfect choice for the track.

Following the success of the single in March 2000, Melanie invited Lisa to promote the single with her in London for a couple of performances and interviews to help keep the track at number one for a second week!

At the time of the promotional run, Lisa told Top Of The Pops: Backstage how she felt about being part of the success with Melanie. “Now that we might be number one twice in a row, I feel like I’m running a marathon and I’m almost at the finish line!”, she says excitedly.

The solo recognition also meant a lot to Lisa, as she was seeking to launch her solo career in the UK. “It is important. I’m going to be coming back over here to do a solo project of mine, so it is always good to be recognised and especially if you can make that number one slot”.

Lisa and Mel C also stopped by at BBC Radio One, where Lisa further discusses her need to have her voice heard solo. “I’ve always wanted to do a solo album. I am an emcee, and I love TLC — but I’m very limited to the amount of work that I can actually do. It’s usually a few songs, 16 bars here and there, and I like to really strut my stuff.”

“But as far as the rumors, we’re fine. We haven’t broken up. We went through a little something last year, but it’s not the first time that we’ve been through something, it’s just the first time that it was publicized”, Lisa explains.

“The issues that have existed?”, Lisa continues,  “personal differences when it comes to business decisions and the direction that we move forward in. It’s one group, with three different people with three different visions, so which direction do we go in?”.

Mel C co-signs with Lisa about the struggles of being in a group. “We have earned the right to yell at each other”, Lisa jests. “You spend so much time together that you become like sisters”, Mel adds. “And no matter what’s said you still love each other. You iron out your differences and you sort it out”.

“Never Be The Same Again” will always be special to Mel C, not just because it blessed her with her first number one, but because Lisa was a part of it with her. “This will always be a very important song to me, obviously being my first UK No. 1 and really launching the whole album to new heights, but also sadly losing Lisa was so tragic, she was so young and such a huge talent, so I feel very lucky I was able to work with her and we have this piece of music, that we worked on together, forever”.

Melanie eventually got the chance to meet the rest of TLC in 2018 at the Mighty Hoopla in London, 19 years since she first worked with Lisa. Fans can always live in hope that the two biggest girl groups in history unite one day on tour. Lisa would have loved the idea.

Melanie C’s new single, “Who I Am“, is out now.

Glastonbury 2020 Featuring TLC Cancelled Due To Coronavirus Outbreak

TLC Glastonbury 2020

Many saw it coming, but today (March 18) the inevitable was confirmed. Glastonbury 2020 will be cancelled due to the threat from the international pandemic of the COVID-19 outbreak.

TLC were announced last week on March 12 as part of the festival’s exciting 2020 line-up to celebrate it’s 50th anniversary since it first began. Other acts set to perform included Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Diana Ross, Paul McCartney, Kelis, Pet Shop Boys, The Isley Brothers, Tones And I, Lana Del Rey and more.

Organisers Emily and Michael Eavis posted a statement this morning, explaining that despite announcing the line-up for what would have been the 50 anniversary event last week, the festival will now not go ahead.

Chilli had hinted that TLC could be making their Glastonbury debut when she spoke to the BBC last November. When the topic of Glastonbury 2020 was brought up, Chilli said, “Is that what you heard? I heard that too. That’s what I’m hearing”.

Their statement in full reads as follows:

“We are so sorry to announce this, but Glastonbury 2020 will have to be cancelled, and this will be an enforced fallow year for the Festival.

Clearly this was not a course of action we hoped to take for our 50th anniversary event, but following the new government measures announced this week – and in times of such unprecedented uncertainty – this is now our only viable option.

We very much hope that the situation in the UK will have improved enormously by the end of June. But even if it has, we are no longer able to spend the next three months with thousands of crew here on the farm, helping us with the enormous job of building the infrastructure and attractions needed to welcome more than 200,000 people to a temporary city in these fields.

We would like to send our sincere apologies to the 135,000 people who have already paid a deposit for a Glastonbury 2020 ticket. The balance payments on those tickets were due at the beginning of April and we wanted to make a firm decision before then.

We understand that it is not always easy to secure a Glastonbury ticket, which is why we would like to offer all those people the chance to roll their £50 deposit over to next year, and guarantee the opportunity to buy a ticket for Glastonbury 2021. Those who would prefer a refund of that £50 will be able to contact See Tickets in the coming days in order to secure that.

This option will remain available until September this year. For those who are happy to roll their deposit over, that will happen automatically. Further information – including details on rolling over coach packages, official accommodation bookings and local Sunday tickets – will be added to our website in the coming days.

The cancellation of this year’s Festival will no doubt come as a terrible blow to our incredible crew and volunteers who work so hard to make this event happen. There will also inevitably be severe financial implications as a result of this cancellation – not just for us, but also the Festival’s charity partners, suppliers, traders, local landowners and our community.

We were so looking forward to welcoming you all for our 50th anniversary with a line-up full of fantastic artists and performers that we were incredibly proud to have booked. Again, we’re so sorry that this decision has been made. It was not through choice. But we look forward to welcoming you back to these fields next year and until then, we send our love and support to all of you.”

A number of high profile sporting events and music festivals have also been postponed recently. Coachella and Stagecoach will now take place in October, following the coronavirus crisis. Refunds are being made available to those unable to attend the rescheduled dates.

It is currently unclear which other TLC shows will still be going ahead as planned this summer, or which, if any, will also be affected by the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to Glastonbury on June 28, TLC have two other UK shows booked: O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire (June 29) and Love Supreme Jazz Festival (July 4). Followed by spot dates across Europe, including Iceland and Denmark.

T-Boz said future postponements will be announced quickly, if necessary, following the government recommended quarantines to contain the virus outbreak from spreading further. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as things progress.

Stay safe and look after yourselves!

Chilli Promotes TLC Concert On British Television While T-Boz Issues Statement Against False Information About Left Eye

The UK were blessed with a surprise dose of TLC this week!

Chilli made an exclusive and debut appearance on the British breakfast television show, Good Morning Britain, on January 24, 2020 to talk everything TLC and to promote their upcoming show in London this summer on the 25th anniversary of their best-selling album, ‘CrazySexyCool‘.

T-Boz was unable to join her in the interview, which was a live satellite transmission from their studio in Los Angeles, as she had to take her daughter, Chase Rolison, to the hospital. So, Chilli held it down for her sister on her own.

Chilli talked to hosts Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway about everything, from what she thinks about her UK fans and the weather, to how the ground-breaking hit “Waterfalls” was created and continuing the group to honor Left Eye.

She explained how they came up with the iconic dance to accompany the major hit. “It was born from a dance called the Bankhead Bounce, but we had to slow it down for “Waterfalls”, and put a little lean to it”, she told the presenters.

Chilli said it was a blessing that TLC’s music has stood the test of time and continues to sound as fresh today as it was back in the day. “When you’re in the studio working, you hope and you pray that you have timeless music. You don’t know at the time, so only time can tell you. It’s been a lot of years later and people still love the song. I think the lyrical content is what people can relate to and understand, so that helps, too”.

When asked about whether they have ever been asked to hire a new 3rd member to replace Left Eye, Chilli reassures us that no member of TLC can ever be replaced, implying that people are finally understanding that fact, after continuing to tour as a duo with T-Boz over the years, keeping Lisa’s legacy alive and never muting her raps.

Chilli was surprised by Kate Garraway questioning her about Left Eye taking a day release from ‘prison’ to record for “CrazySexyCool”.

In 1994, Lisa was sentenced to five years probation at a diversion center after she set fire to her ex-boyfriend Andre Rison‘s trainers and subsequently burned down their home.

Clearly astounded by Kate’s line of questioning, a perplexed Chilli asked: ‘Did you say prison?’

She then asked: ‘Jail?’ before simply laughing at Kate and brushed off the subject completely.

However, she did add: ‘We weren’t able to record at the same time, but she was very much a part of that.’

T-Boz, who saw the interview later on, was also disappointed in Kate’s questioning, and took to her Twitter to make a statement. “It’s quite disappointing that Kate Garraway of Good Morning Britain decided to bait Chilli (who handled it very well) by disrespecting Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes in the midst of spreading false information during an interview.

T-Boz went on to school Kate on the facts of the subject she was trying to refer to during the interview. “Lisa was in a diversion center not “Prison” and that is completely unacceptable. It’s CLEAR Kate didn’t do her homework and stood by her preposterous statement. Sadly, Chilli never got a chance to promote our June 29th upcoming show at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire which was the point of the interview.”

GMB viewers were quick to pick up on the tension, as they took to Twitter to comment on the exchange.

#Ooops! “Did you say prison?” I don’t think Kate was supposed to go there. #GMB’ wrote one viewer.

While another remarked: ‘How to screw up an interview 101. Well done Kate #TLC #GMB.’

With a third tickled person simply adding: ‘That’s a no then.’

Tickets to TLC’s one-off show in London this summer at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on June 29 are still on sale. Get your tickets HERE
