Coi Leray Pays Homage to Left Eye and TLC During 2023 BET Awards Performance

Hip-hop star Coi Leray pulled out all the stops at the 2023 BET Awards on June 25, when she decided to pay homage to some of the most iconic female rappers from past to present day!

Her two-piece custom outfit donned the names of icons and new stars alike, including Left Eye, Queen Latifah, Ice Spice, Doja Cat, Missy Elliott, Lady of Rage, Roxanne Shanté, Saweetie, City Girls, Gangsta Boo, Young M.A, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, BIA, Dej Loaf, Remy Ma, Trina, Khia, Shawnna, Flo Milli, Lola Brooke, GloRilla, Eve, Nicki Minaj and more.

The salute arrived nearly two weeks after Leray pleaded for her fellow female rappers to unite for a collaboration.

“Ain’t been a [No. 1] rap song at all this year,” she tweeted. “Calling all the female rappers to the front. [Hear] me out. ladies night. Hip hop. Unity. let’s make history with a number 1 … together .. with love. #justanidea.”

The last all female rap collaboration was 1997’s “Not Tonight (Ladies Night)“, featuring Lil’ Kim, Left Eye, Missy Elliott, Da Brat and Angie Martinez.

If you thought the black and white outfits looked familiar, that is largely due to the fact Leray used inspiration from TLC‘s iconic performance at the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards, paying homage not only to their fashion but also replicating the choreography they performed during their set.

The outfits were created by the talented fashion designer OtheezY, who has worked with Leray numerous times in the past, and KRONE, who said, “Coi and dancers in everything KRONE (Hand cut, sewn and stoned) and sleepless nights/countless hours of work by myself and my team”.

To celebrate the success of the performance, OtheezY included a fun fact on her Instagram page about how the performance idea first came together.

“Coi was like, I wanna be on some Left Eye shit, woman empowerment vibe, all leather!”, OtheezY recalls. “She was hyped! As soon as she said ‘LEFT EYE’, I said ‘TLC’! and the 1995 VMA iconic TLC performance came to mind. Coi wanted to give homage to old school and new school female MC’s, and I thought that was so freakin’ cool! Anywho, WE DID THAT!”

Doja Cat Inspired by TLC in Latest Music Video ‘Get Into It (Yuh)’

Doja Cat has seemingly paid some homage to the legendary TLC in the latest single to be lifted from her third studio album, ‘Planet Her‘. “Get Into It (Yuh)” went viral on TikTok, so Doja Cat finally released the music video on January 31, 2022.

In the intergalactic music video, directed by Mike Diva, Doja Cat is on a mission to rescue her pet cat and takes on some aliens! The video also features a cameo by the producer of the track, Y2K.

One of the scenes in the video has a striking resemblance to the iconic 1999 “No Scrubs” video, the lead single from TLC’s ‘FanMail‘ album. The futuristic elements of Doja Cat’s video match the TLC classic, as well as her hair and make-up, resembling T-Boz‘s look in the video.

Doja Cat’s hairstylist Jared Henderson seemed to confirm the comparisons to T-Boz when a fan mentioned to him that Doja Cat’s pink hairdo was giving him T-Boz vibes, and Jared pinned the comment on his post. Doja Cat’s make-up was done by Ernesto Casillas.

Doja Cat fans were quick to highlight the homage Doja Cat was paying to the trendsetters TLC, and they all approved of the music video.

Some fans even feel that Doja Cat’s moves are similar to the moves Left Eye does during the scenes when she performs her rap.

Update — BLAQUE announced the release date for ‘Torch’ will be May 31, 2019!

The girls made the announcement on Facebook today (May 4, 2019).

———————————————————–

After years of disappointments, false hopes and petitioning, the ladies of the group Blaque (discovered by Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes) have finally delivered fans the news they have all been waiting for — they will be releasing their previously unreleased album Torch!

Torch was recorded back in 2003 as a follow-up to their second album, Blaque Out (which was also heavily delayed due to record label conflicts). Torch was scheduled to be released on Elektra Records in 2004, but the girls were instead released from their record contract, leaving the completed album unreleased.

Fans have been demanding the album to be released for many years. Our friends at Dimension TLC even put together a petition to get the album heard. This got the attention of the remaining Blaque members, Shamari DeVoe and Brandi Williams, and they are listening!

On October 28, the birthday of the late Natina Reed, Shamari and Brandi decided host the first Remembering Natina annual party to celebrate her life, and announced to the world that they were going to release the Torch album in full, very soon!

Dimension TLC owner James posted the announcement in the Blaque Out! chat group on Facebook. “Our true Blaque fans!“, Brandi said excitedly to the crowd. “Y’all know about that Torch album? Y’all have been asking, y’all have been petitioning, y’all have been dying to know what happened to Torch.”

Well tonight“, Brandi continued, “on our sisters birthday, we have decided to let everyone know that Torch will be released very soon!”.

“Not just the snippets, but the FULL album!”, Shamari insisted. “Every single song. We just copped the masters for Torch! We are releasing Torch!”.

The Torch album features a fitting tribute to their idol Left Eye on a track titled “Her Name”. The singles “Ugly” (featuring Missy Elliott) and “I’m Good” from the Honey soundtrack are also on the tracklist.

Shamari has been cast in the latest season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. With the show still reeling in record viewing numbers, we’re pretty certain this will attract more fans back to Blaque!
